HELP CONSERVE A RHINO BY TAGGING THE SLEEPING ANIMAL’S EAR FOR RESEARCH AND SECURITY MONITORING

Why is this safari better?

Experience the rare opportunity to participate in a rhino notching experience at &BEYOND’s Ngala Private Game Reserve. Witness the darting of a rhino, and assist the veterinary team in tagging the sleeping rhino’s ear for research and security monitoring, before releasing it back into the wild.

Rhino Notching Experience
PRICE: US$ 4,200 per group (max 8 guests)
Experience Duration: 4 hrs

Set within South Africa’s largest and most well-known game reserve in the world, Ngala Private Game Reserve offers not only one of the most incredible Big Five wildlife experiences in the world, but also offers an intimate one due to our exclusive traversing rights on 14,700 hectares (36,000 acre) of wilderness land. Safaris are led by expert trained ranger and tracker teams, that ensure sensitive off-roading practices to allow close-up game sightings of elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion, leopard, spotted hyena, giraffe and more.

When to travel?

South Africa is the ultimate year-round destination. No matter when you decide to travel, there’s always something amazing going on—from whale migrations and prime game-viewing in winter; to blissful sunshine and Christmas festivities in summer.

May through September is typically the drier season, covering winter and a shorter spring season, and making it ideal for game drives and other outdoor activities. October through April is the wet season, encompassing fall and summer. This is an excellent season for bird-watching, and even then, rains are often quick showers that are unlikely to affect your trip. December through February are very hot (the equivalent of summer for the Northern Hemisphere) and can be crowded since schools are on holiday.

* Rhino ‘notching’ experience available April to September only.

Which lodge to stay at?

&BEYOND NGALA SAFARI LODGE

FOR SOLOS, COUPLES & FAMILIES

Tucked under a canopy of mopane and tamboti trees, Ngala Safari Lodge boasts 20 Classic thatched cottages, including three Family Cottages with interleading rooms, and the spacious Family Suite. Each of the spacious and classic ensuite cottages exudes a romantic ambience with nostalgic safari memorabilia throughout. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows make the most of sunny safari days and a private veranda offers the perfect setting for intimate dinners. Family Cottages can accommodate two adults and two children, while the gracious Family Suite also accommodates four guests, but includes access to a private swimming pool and the use of a private vehicle.

The lodge’s swimming pool and sundeck overlook a natural riverine woodland, ideal for avid birdwatchers, while a tranquil massage sala and a well-equipped fitness room can be enjoyed in between game drives. Dinners are set in a candlelit courtyard or showcased as an African feast in the open-air boma.

&BEYOND NGALA TENTED CAMP

FOR SOLOS & COUPLES

Chic and contemporary, Ngala Tented Camp comprises just nine intimate and luxurious tents, making it a perfect exclusive-use option for a small group of family or friends. The tented suites are set on raised platforms and cleverly designed to blend into the riverside trees, minimising the impact on the environment. Each tented suite has an ensuite bathroom, swirling overhead fan, air conditioning, outdoor showers, snug electric blankets for winter and private wooden decks.

The elegant guest areas overlook the seasonal Timbavati River, and are the ideal tranquil location to enjoy a quiet book or a refreshing drink with your complimentary Swarovski binoculars in hand, just in case a herd of elephants or another animal saunters by. The camp’s lap pool, which follows the contours of the Timbavati riverbank is perfect for afternoon game viewing, while a nearby massage sala overlooking the magnificent view is the ideal spot to unwind between safaris. Private lunch platters are savoured on the viewing decks, at the poolside or on the lush lawn, while private dinners are serves wither on the starlit deck or, if the weather permits, in the dry riverbed.

NGALA RHINO ‘NOTCHING’ EXPERIENCE

PRICE: US$ 4,200 per group (max 8 guests)

Experience the rare opportunity to participate in a rhino notching experience at &BEYOND’s Ngala Private Game Reserve. Witness the darting of a rhino, and assist the veterinary team in tagging the sleeping rhino’s ear for research and security monitoring, before releasing it back into the wild.

Ngala is committed to ensuring the survival of Africa’s rhinos and, as such, we implement best practice research and management practices. Ear notches enable researchers to correctly identify different individuals on the Reserve. Each rhino is given a unique ear notch number, and microchips are placed in the horn and body for identification and security purposes. Measurements, horn shavings and skin samples are also taken for DNA analysis.

Rhinos are in need of ear notches and we are inviting groups of up to eight guests each (sharing one vehicle) to participate in this extraordinary experience. You will play an active role in the day’s adventure. As the veterinary team flies overhead in a helicopter in search of the rhino, guests will follow in hot pursuit with an expert ranger in an open 4×4 safari vehicle. Once the animal is located and darted, the helicopter will land, and guests will have the never-to-be-repeated opportunity to touch the anaesthetised rhino during the notching procedure.

All funds raised go directly towards the costs of running Ngala’s rhino conservation and management project.

Available at an additional cost (excluding accommodation), and subject to the availability of the wildlife veterinarian and helicopter pilot. If less than 6 guests, a private vehicle will need to be booked. Minimum stay of 3 nights’ stay required in order to guarantee favourable conditions for darting.
