SUSTAINABLE CAMPS & LODGES

Etosha Mountain Lodge, Etosha National Park

Located in the exclusive Etosha Heights Private Reserve on the southwest border of Etosha National Park, the lodge has been going strong for over 10 years and we were delighted to take the reins in 2018. At the lodge, you can expect nine, classically-Namibian chalets, all with 180-degree, camera-loving panoramas of the wilderness, a beautiful main ‘lapa’ area, and a cool swimming pool for the hot African days.

The activities certainly don’t disappoint either. Think morning and afternoon game drives in the private reserve, a former hunting concession and one which we are pleased to be rehabilitating into a photographic safari area. Go out in search of big cats and watch for signs of elephant on the horizon; watch all the action at the waterhole in front of camp; hop on a night drive with some of the best guides out there; and, of course, track endangered rhino, the icons of the area.

Why You’ll Love Etosha Mountain Lodge:

  • Well-established, comfortable and classically Namibian in style, Etosha Mountain Lodge is the perfect place from which to discover the iconic wildlife of Etosha Heights
  • With only nine chalets, this is the perfect lodge for small groups and families to book privately for the most personal of safaris
  • Track endangered black and white rhino
  • Have your cameras at the ready for throngs of antelope and trumpeting herds of ellies
  • Enjoy the peace and solitude that comes from staying in a private reserve, far from tourist crowds

Kwessi Dunes, NamibRand Nature Reserve

Kwessi Dunes is located deep in Namibia’s striking NamibRand Nature Reserve, a vast desert wilderness of over 200,000 hectares. With its rolling desert plains and backdrop of craggy mountains and iconic red dunes, this is a place where time seems to stand still and the space is never-ending. Here, it’s not about chasing big game but rather soaking up the beauty of the colourful landscape, admiring the antelope that scatter the sand, and gazing at the stars that light up the night sky.

At Kwessi Dunes, you’ll find 12 cool and comfortable (and air-conditioned) chalets all with canvas walls and thatched roofs. Each bedroom has a separate ‘star gazer’ room, completely open to the sky, and the perfect spot from which to watch the celestial theatre show above. Views from the rooms, the main area and the swimming pool are of the vast, desert vistas and when you can bear to tear your eyes away, enjoy quad biking, scenic drives and walks, hot air ballooning, helicopter flights, horse riding and day trips to Sossusvlei.

Why You’ll Love Kwessi Dunes:

  • Diverse landscape of rich, red dunes, fairy circles, unravelling plains and mountains
  • The rooms are cool and quirky (and air conditioned!)
  • Private experience on a private reserve and the small number of lodges
  • You’ll have access to all 200,000 hectares of the NamibRand Reserve
  • Break away from traditional game drives and try horse riding, star gazing, quad biking, a nature walk or a hot air balloon flight
  • Star gazing opportunities are out of this world. The NamibRand is Africa’s first designated International Dark Sky Reserve meaning it’s one of the least light-polluted areas in the world – and it shows.

Hoanib Valley Camp, Hoanib River, Kaokoland

Deep in north-western Namibia, the area is a melee of towering mountains, sand dunes, and huge expanses of desert, scattered with unique wildlife and nomadic Himba settlements. It’s also one of Namibia’s most remote and wild environments, and one that not many will get the chance to discover in a lifetime.

And that’s exactly why we’ve decided to build Hoanib Valley Camp. A joint venture between the local communities and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the world’s only Africa-wide giraffe conservation organisation, the camp is an elegant, intimate affair that immerses you into the wilds of the desert. The six rooms blend seamlessly with the environment, offering a simple aesthetic that matches the rugged landscape down to a tee. Days are spent tracking endangered rhino, desert-adapted elephant, and of course desert-adapted giraffe, before retiring to your private veranda to marvel at the magnitude of your surroundings (G&T in hand).

Why You’ll Love Hoanib Valley Camp:

  • Discover the true magnitude and magic of Namibia
  • One of the best places to see desert adapted elephant, giraffe, lion, rhino, mountain zebra, and oryx.
  • Sip G&T on your private veranda and contemplate the beauty spread out all around you.
  • Learn more about the ground-breaking giraffe research
  • Spend time with local Herero people and learn a little of their fascinating way of life
  • Embark on a guided nature walk and uncover the smaller flora and fauna of the desert

  • Etosha Mountain Lodge anti-poaching camp and team, who are dedicated to protecting the rhinos and preventing any illegal hunting from happening along the boundaries of the reserve
  • Communal Herding for Livestock and Wildlife Protection; This marvellous communal herding programme by CLAWS (Communities Living Alongside Wildlife Sustainably) safeguards cattle, creates employment, reduces retaliatory killing of lions and restores overgrazed landscapes
  • Desert-Dwelling Giraffe Conservation; giraffes across Africa are under threat, and together with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the accommodation management are creating a strong presence in northwest Namibia to further understanding of this Angolan sub-species and create awareness of the plight of these stately and beautiful creatures
