When to travel?

We keep saying it, but really, any time!!

Kenya is an all-year-destination; big cats don’t migrate, so you will likely see lions, cheetah and hopefully the elusive leopard any time of the year. Birding is excellent year-round, from beautiful migratory birds to resident species. Low season (January-June and November) is also a fantastic time to escape the crowds, with equally amazing sightings and experiences.

Angama Mara

The Best View in the Mara

Set on the edge of an escarpment, there is little that is conventional about the creation of Angama Mara, with views that stretch as far as the eye can see across the Maasai Mara set 300 meters below.

On lovely Mara days, all the action will be on the deck and during those dramatic but brief afternoon thunderstorms, guests are safely tucked behind the floor to ceiling glass doors watching the spectacle unfold. As quickly as these storms roll in, they dissipate and back outside our guests go.

Explore Angama Mara’s one-acre Shamba (Kiswahili for kitchen garden), guided by a Shamba keeper who will explain the produce, encouraging you to pick and taste along the way. This is followed by a soil-to-fork lunch under towering moth trees. There are many moments during a guest’s stay when they can interact with the Maasai people, both at Angama Mara and in a neighbouring village. In and around the lodge, guests will spend time with Maasai staff, as the majority of the people who work here come from local communities; and guides, naturalists, the baker, and a camp manager are all Maasai.

Each tent has the same breathtaking view – no one is better than the last – and every day, the sunrise provides guests with early morning theatre as the hot air balloons float gently by.

Activities

Guests staying at Angama Mara are faced with many choices of how they wish to spend their day. Sunrise hot-air balloon safaris, photographing Africa’s abundant wildlife, walking on the edge of the Great Rift Valley, or visiting a Maasai family in their home – these are just a few of the adventures on offer.

GAME DRIVES (AM & PM)
Game drives are crafted around guests. Guests are asked where they have been; what they have seen; what their great passions are; what they would like to do and when they would like to do it; and for how long they would like to be on a game drive at any one time – and game drives are structured accordingly. Guests could leave the lodge at dawn, or decide to go on a game drive after breakfast, descend down Angama Mara’s private road and 10-minutes later find themselves in the heart of the action – surrounded by more animals than they could imagine: the vast grasslands dotted with acacias are home to abundant herds, as well as Africa’s Big Five – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

WALKING SAFARIS
Maasai Naturalists offer guided walks through lovely forests and open areas in-between. The birding up here, high above the Maasai Mara, is especially rewarding. Guests learn the traditional ways of the Maasai people from the Naturalists: local legends, fables, traditions, customs, the medicinal use of plants, and are often treated to singing and dancing along the way.

HOT AIR BALLOON FLIGHT
Wake before the dawn, with freshly brewed tea or coffee delivered right to your tent, and enjoy the fresh, early morning drive to the launch site. A quick and straight-forward pre-flight briefing, and before you know it, the balloon is airborne and you’re floating effortlessly above the Mara. The soft, early morning breeze takes the balloon southwards towards the Tanzanian border, with the typical flight path along the Mara River and its adjoining forest, and over the open plains beyond. This is an unmatched safari – even the lions look up in surprise as one sails on by.

Families

Angama Mara welcomes children aged 6 years and older in Peak Season (all ages welcome during Standard Season). The first two children under the age of 12 in any reservation stay free of charge at Angama Mara during Standard Season.

Each camp has 4 sets of interconnected tented suites. Children 12 and under are able to share a triple (either with parents or siblings), please request our children’s rates.

Sustainability

Each guest at Angama Mara contributes a US$ 10 per night donation to the Angama Foundation, a separate entity which has been setup to support the communities that neighbour the lodge and the wildlife and land that surround it. The Foundation is active through three fields of work: Education, Healthcare and Conservation.

  • The Foundation works first and foremost with the Mara Conservancy to ensure the longevity of the Mara Triangle, and may play a broader role within the greater Mara-Serengeti ecosystem once the sustainability of the Triangle has been assured.
  • There are several schools in the vicinity of Angama Mara, all of which are at different stages of development. The Foundation has structured its support in order to improve the general level of education offering in the area, and on a hierarchy of needs: classrooms, food, running water & security first, then learning materials and digital / eLearning initiatives.
  • The Foundation is working to improve the health and welfare of the neighbouring communities by facilitating the provision of medicine and skilled medical advice.
