THORNYBUSH NATURE RESERVE
Thornybush is a collection of luxury lodges in the world-renowned wilderness areas of Sabi Sand and Thornybush Nature Reserve in Kruger Park. Big 5 encounters and the sheer diversity of wildlife in the Kruger Park have helped establish Thornybush as a leading destination in the Greater Kruger Park area. It’s the people here, however, that are the real secret to the “bush magic”. Thornybush’s guides lead with an expertise and intuition that’s second to none, while their close-knit teams within the Thornybush lodges, from the receptionists to the chefs, create the homely environment our clients recognise as that ‘Thornybush feeling’.
Sustainability: Your booking supports local guides and communities through eco-conscious travel and supporting local enterprise through community visits and purchasing of local crafts.
When to travel?
South Africa really is a year-round destination. Each season has its own beauty and in an ideal world, one should try and experience the bushveld in the winter and in the summer to enjoy the two contrasts. South African summers are hot but tolerable as the air is very dry. Spectacular thunderstorms occur during the months of November through to March. Winter is dry and generally easier to view game as the bush is not as dense. The winter days are fantastic as temperatures average a moderate 20 degrees Celsius. When traveling in the winter months it is recommended that you dress warmly for both morning and evening game drives.
Set on riverbeds or overlooking waterholes, the Thornybush lodges are luxurious oases where our guests can savour the joys of the wilderness in comfort. Our lodges vary in size and stature, with both inclusive and sole use options which include self-catering. Regardless of what type of safari you’re looking for, your time with us in the bush will be unforgettable.
While the fantastic settings, cuisine, suites and small touches are sure to impress, it’s the people of Thornybush who are the beating heart of what we do and the reason guests return to us. Many staff members have been in our family for over 20 years and if there’s one feature of Thornybush we’re most proud of, it’s that so many guests also leave feeling part of our family.
Which will you choose?
THORNYBUSH GAME LODGE
The original Thornybush establishment, has changed and evolved since 1961 to the sophisticated, down-to-each luxury lodge it is today. Warm-hearted staff, expert guides and unobstructed views of the waterhole from the deck are standout features.
Now, with a note of sophistication in the design and layout, our thatched main area overlooks a waterhole and riverbed frequently visited by elephants, buffalo and other large game at the Thornybush Lodge. The classic lower deck flows between the open dining area and a beautiful bar. The 20 luxurious suites fan out from the main area, with 18 of them enjoying splendid river-facing views. Two of the 20 are Family Suites.
SASEKA TENTED CAMP
Our extraordinary 5-star lodge serves up understated luxury on the banks of the seasonal Monwana River, across eight spacious tented suites. The striking design of the lodge, luxurious touches and spectacular location have combined to create a lodge that is like no other in the Greater Kruger Park region.
Eight luxury tents, each with their own private deck, outdoor shower and pool, accommodate two guests each. The Leadwood Villa can host groups with a central lounge and dining area, shared deck and pool, as well as a private safari vehicle.
SIMBAMBILI GAME LODGE (SABI SANDS)
Set in the famous Sabi Sand Game Reserve, Simbambili impresses with its incredible game viewing opportunities. Managed with warmth and passion, Simbambili offers a down-to-earth yet luxurious bush experience where the world-class wildlife encounters, expert rangers, extensive private decks and welcoming atmosphere results in bucket-list experiences.
The managers, Mike and Tania, have been at Simbambili for over 10 years and ensure the lodge has a comfortable, sophisticated feel. We’re also extremely proud of our guides and trackers whose wealth of knowledge and passionate for what they do, continuously leave lasting impressions.
All of the nine spacious suites face the riverbed and woodlands, each with its own private plunge pool, sala bed on the deck and a free-standing bath, with the Waterhole Suite overlooking the waterhole.
Safaris to suit all travellers
MORNING & AFTERNOON GAME DRIVE
Awaken to a pink dawn, the sounds of the morning chorus as the birds begin to stir and look forward to a new day and an exciting chance to see the African wildlife begin their day – this is the ultimate welcome to a morning drive at Thornybush. You’ll need to be up before the sun, starting with a morning coffee and a snack before you hop into our game vehicles and set off to see the best big 5 animal sightings. Morning game drives are a perfect opportunity to seek out wildlife as this is when the land is cool and the animals are most active. Anything is possible and sightings come quickly, so prepare those cameras and have your bush eyes peeled! After a couple hours of roaming the reserve you’ll stop at a special spot for our famous bush coffee break before heading back for a delicious late breakfast.
Following a lazy afternoon, most likely spent by the pool or on your deck, we’ll meet for a deliciously prepared afternoon tea with sweet treats before you climb into your game vehicle for a three-hour drive that leads into the evening. The sundowner stop at one of our favourite viewpoints will no doubt show off one of Africa’s iconic sights – a sunset casting golden light across an African savanna. As night sets in, you’ll start to see new animals stir on your safari at night experience, adding another level of excitement to the end of the drive.
Following a morning game drive, our guests can be treated to breakfast in a beautiful bush setting. While the savannah stirs to life, we serve a wide variety of breakfast dishes that our guests enjoy surrounded by the untouched African wilderness. No matter what your dietary requirements may be, we’ve got a dish for you.
A walking safari offers something quite different to a game drive: the thrill of being on foot in a Big 5 reserve and a chance to engage with the smaller things. You learn about tracking, insects, flowers and most of all the power of the African landscape. It’s a chance to have an immersive experience where you get down and touch and smell what’s out there while at the same time you never quite know what you’ll encounter around the next corner. There is little that compares to a walking safari or going on a safari hiking experience in a true big 5 safari reserve.
Thornybush runs a non-profit organisation that aims to uplift the surrounding local communities that many of our staff members come from. Exciting initiatives such as community owned agricultural businesses, food security, youth focused conservation awareness, sustainable procurement and infrastructure upgrades are all major focus areas of ours.
Thornybush Game Lodge: Children of all ages are welcome. Children under 6 years of age are not permitted on game drives. In order to guarantee a game drive for children, a private vehicle should be booked (subject to availability) at an additional cost of R7,500 per day
Saseka Tented Camp and Simbambili Game Lodge: Children from 12 years of age are welcome. All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult during game drives. Children under 16 years of age are not permitted on bush walks
In 2005, Thornybush created Inzalo Community Project T/A Thornybush Community Project, a registered non-profit organisation, with the objective of nurturing and uplifting its surrounding local communities, adjacent to the protected area’s.
Located on the Western Boarder of the Greater Kruger National Park and on the boundary of the Northern Sabi Sand Game Reserve, the Thornybush Community Projects had mainly focused its work in two Villages, Uthla and its smaller neighbouring community Dixie. In late 2019, a new geographical area was identified in Acornhoek, which has allowed for some exciting partnership additions.
Over the years, the focus area’s have expanded and the Thornybush Community Project has found itself as a contributor in both the NPO sector and a supporter of various community initiatives.
