When to travel?
The wildebeest and zebra migration season in the Masai Mara is from mid July-October, with vast herds moving up from the Serengeti to Masai Mara. During January-March, the short rains end and sunny days are aplenty. Animals begin to disperse searching for waterholes, making wildlife effortless to spot. Keen birdwatchers? February in the Maasai Mara is an excellent time for bird viewing.
April-May tends to be the rainy season and if you don’t mind a little Afternoon rain, expect plenty of young animals from March onwards, fresh greenery and flora – plus an excellent time for photography. We’ve travelled during this season and it’s spectacular. October-December sees the migration dwindle down to a few hangers-around, with excellent migratory birds flying in – and remember, the big cats stay. This shoulder season sees lower temperatures and still excellent wildlife.
