Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is located near the town of Gansbaai, a stunning luxury lodge, perfect for taking in South Africa’s whale coast and shark diving capital. At Grootbos, they go beyond simply conserving this pristine wilderness they call home. Grootbos are constantly researching, innovating and pioneering new ways of doing things – in order to transform the lives of community members as well as preserve 2500 hectares of botanical and wildlife treasures.

Shoulder season offers fewer crowds and more wildlife. Fall (April and May) provides the optimum wildlife-watching conditions, while spring (September and October) is the best time for whale watching. Wildflower season runs from late August to early September.

May through September is typically the drier season, covering winter and a shorter spring season, and making it ideal for game drives and other outdoor activities. October through April is the wet season, encompassing fall and summer. This is an excellent season for bird-watching, and even then, rains are often quick showers that are unlikely to affect your trip. December through February are very hot (the equivalent of summer for the Northern Hemisphere) and can be crowded since schools are on holiday.

Shoulder Season: 1 May – 15 July
High Season: 11 January – 30 April, 16 July – 15 December 2022 and 11 January – 30 April 2023
