When to travel?

It’s always a good time to travel to the magical place that is Tsavo – it’s exquisite all year round.

With an equatorial climate, Tsavo is defined more by rainfall than temperature. The temperature is fairly consistent year round. Kenya experiences short rains in April and May and long rains in November and December. These periods don’t affect the safari or game viewing in Tsavo as rainfall is minimal in this region. While the rainy seasons offer the chance to see the world around us spring to life, the dryer intervening months make it easier to see our many resident animals. Both are beautiful to witness.

Finch Hattons is located in Tsavo West National Park, between Mount Kilimanjaro to the west and the Chyulu Hills to the northeast. Tsavo is a place of contrasts and a place of great variety – the greatest, in fact. It boasts the largest biodiversity in the world, and numerous ecosystems and landscapes. It is famous for its 19th century man-eating lions, and for its references in the classic book and film, Out of Africa. Through its rich history and dramatic scenery, Tsavo connects nature, wildlife and humankind in profound and magnificent ways.

Shoulder Season: 1 January – 14 June and 15 October – 21 December 2022
High Season: 15 June – 14 October and 22 – 31 December 2022

Luxury Lodge

Finch Hattons is a luxury tented safari camp that combines its love for Tsavo with world-class facilities. The camp is completely isolated, so much so that you would be forgiven for forgetting that the rest of the world exists at all. In this place, it’s just you, the vast and varied terrain that stretches in every direction, and the many beasts and birds that call it home.

Designed to be minimally intrusive, the camp’s 17 luxury suites offer sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, as well as total privacy for guests. The tents’ open-plan design invites the cool breeze that drifts over the nearby natural springs, and brings the sounds and scents of the African bush directly to you. The result is a one-on-one experience with Africa; this is the bush in all of its immediate and unapologetic beauty.

Activities

At Finch Hattons, there’s no shortage of activities to keep you busy and entertained – you can select as many of the activities below as you wish. Each of these options can be individually tailored to suit your interests and needs. Simply speak to any member of Finch’s team, they’ll be happy to help you.

Day and night game drives
From the vantage point of one of open game viewing Land Cruisers, experience the delight of observing Africa’s greatest animals in their natural habitat, as well as the many diverse landscapes that make Tsavo so unique. The best times to spot wildlife are in the early morning and the late afternoon. There are two scheduled game drives at these times but the lodge can of course cater to your times and needs. Night game drives are also available to view the park’s nocturnal creatures, which include leopards, civets, genets and bush babies.

Bush walks and crater climbs
Accompanied by a safari guide and armed ranger, bush walks, hikes and crater climbs offer you the chance to experience Tsavo’s fauna and flora first-hand. Your guide will explain the medicinal value of the trees and plants around you, and will help you spot and identify animal footprints and spoor. For the adventurous, a hike to the top of Oldonyo Larami hill offers stunning 360-degree views of Tsavo National Park.

Other activities include: cultural visits, bush breakfast, young explorers club, wellness treatments, sundowners and Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary.

Families

Children aged 6 and over are welcome at Finch Hattons. Family Tented Suite is available for families.

For younger guests, Finch Hattons have a dedicated kids play area, and a library and research centre full of interesting information. The guides are phenomenal with younger generations.
