In the ancient Namib Desert, surrounded by the majestic Tsaris Mountains and endless flat gravel plains, the tented Elegant Desert Camp is situated a mere 45km from Sesriem. Here the sky melts into the endless plains in a vista so vast it will take your breath away. Comprising only ten individual en-suite tents, nestled carefully amongst rugged boulders, this secluded little gem welcomes our guests to a world of vast spaces, endless horizons and jagged mountain heights. The utter tranquillity and extraordinary clarity of light make this area one of Africa’s most compelling landscapes.

The dramatic sand dunes at Sossusvlei can be visited at any time of year but the dry May to October winter months are widely regarded as the best time to visit Namibia for game viewing – especially in Etosha National Park. The skies are clear, the risk of malaria is at its lowest, and animals are increasingly concentrated around water sources as the dry season wears on. Prepare however for freezing night time temperatures in June and July whereas September and October can be extremely hot.

The summer rains between November and April turn the country green and occasionally bring floods to the desert. December can see very rewarding game viewing in Etosha and summer is the best time to go to Namibia for bird watching though you’ll need to watch out for malaria in the Caprivi Strip (newly renamed the Zambezi Region), Namibia’s wettest region and a place best avoided in the peak wet months of January and February.

10 Custom built and meticulously planned 85sqm canvas tents envelope guests in pure privacy and offer uninterrupted desert views. Perfected with an outside viewing deck, each tent features an indoor and outdoor shower, a spacious bathroom as well as all amenities and comforts needed to fully indulge in this remarkable adventure. You even have a mini bar in the form of a cool box and if you prefer to sleep under the glittering stars, you are welcome to roll the beds onto the outside wooden deck. The rising sun will gently wake you to privileged desert views and breathtakingly beautiful scenery.

From the large sundowner deck on top of the mountain, the crystal clear pool embedded between the rocks provides the most exquisite views of the awesome landscape unfolding before you. Swim in the refreshing rock pool or unwind with an ice-cold beer at the hand-crafted bar with 360° rotating hanging chairs. Just sit back, relax and let the magnificent views gently caress your soul.

We suggest that you treat yourself to a laidback lunch at the lodge with a bottle of fine South African wine from the camp’s extensive range, handpicked by the owners. In the afternoon you can unwind at the lodge or return to the camp to enjoy the magnificent vistas, both from your tents’ deck or the pool deck on the mountain side. Take a drink at the pool bar and recline to marvel at the sun-drenched desert plains. You might also opt for the scenic drive with spectacular views overlooking the vast gravel plains contrasted with the Tsaris and Naukluft mountain massifs of the Namib Desert

Dinner is a Namibian affair in the open sky Boma under infinite stars, next to a traditional fireplace where our legendary “braai” (barbeque) is prepared by our friendly and enthusiastic chefs.

Elegant Desert Camp pride themselves on their minimal environmental impact. The building material used is 100% removable and recyclable and much of it is biodegradable. For the gabion walls the natural occurring stones found here in abundance were meticulously selected and integrated. The owners took great care to make the eco Camp 100% self-sustainable, harnessing the power of the sun for hot water and electricity, whilst water comes from boreholes from sources deep beneath the earth. All waste generated is taken to the recycling plant in Windhoek.
