When to travel?

The incredible diversity of mammal and birdlife on offer means that no 2 days are ever the same in Northern Kafue. This is a destination for the safari purists and for travellers wanting to escape the crowds. Much of Kafue National Park is cut-off during the winter and rainy season, making June-November a prime time to take advantage of this miraculous place.

June, July: The rain has completely stopped. These are the coolest months – daytime temperatures are around 25°C/77°F. It gets cold at night with average temperatures of around 6°C/43°F.
August, September: It is still completely dry. The bush is starting to look parched. It is warming up too, and September has an average daytime temperature of 31°C/88°F. Mornings are a little less cold at 13°C/55°F on average.
October: Temperatures keep increasing to an average of 33°C/91°F. Peak temperatures can be much higher. Mornings are more comfortable with temperatures around 16°C/61°F. The first rain usually falls this month – temperatures will drop after the rain as we head into November.

This safari camp is available from 1 June – 30 November 2022 & 2023.

A Classic Safari Camp

The Busanga Plains is undoubtedly the best place for wildlife viewing in Kafue National Park and Kasonso Busanga – located right in the heart of the prime game viewing area. The Busanga Plains area is perfectly situated to see large numbers of red lechwe, but is also well known for the big lions, buffalo, elephant, wildebeest and relaxed roan antelope. Kasonso offers superb wildlife encounters at excellent value for money rates and combines superbly with Kafue River Lodge and Kikuji Camp.

Kasonso is an authentic bush camp that provides all the important fundamentals of a comfortable camp but focuses on the outstanding guiding and wildlife experience. There are 4 tents, each with ensuite bathrooms and verandahs overlooking the plains. In the central boma area, you’ll find a comfortable seating area, bar and and outside deck which you can use at your leisure.

Kasonso Busanga Camp is situated in a more central location in the Busanga Plains closer to the action and is more accessible early and for longer in the year. The team running the camp is Idos and Newton Mulenga (the father and son team formerly of Wilderness Safaris) and Ferrison who is one of the top birding guides in Zambia.

Incredible lion encounters: The lions of Busanga are a highlight of the region and the encounters of these cats moving around the floodplains is something to behold. They’re not known as the ‘swamp lions’ for nothing!

Birding diversity: The water, fig tree islands and floodplains make for superb birding and the Busanga has an incredible birding list to experience.

Lechwe and other animals: The Busanga is also home to extensive lechwe populations and the topography of the land makes for a photographer’s dream! Safari goers can expect to see spectacular big cats, lions (of course), leopard and also other predators such as painted dogs inhabit this spectacular space.
