ANTARCTIC ADVENTURES

ANTARCTICA

WHERE IN THE WORLD

The famed whiteness, iconic species and scene to formidable explorers and documentaries, yet a precious focal point for our planet’s climate.

Antarctica is a desert, the coldest place on Earth. The temperature in the winter is cold enough to freeze water all the time. The temperature in the middle of Antarctica is much colder than the temperature on the coasts.

Founded by genuine polar explorers, White Desert have gone from adventurers themselves to creating the White Desert company that offers this unique travel opportunity, whilst ensuring an environmentally sound experience for travellers.

Better Safaris are proud to offer you this unique opportunity for an adventure of a lifetime, a focussed choice of two adventure itineraries (see below).

KIND TO THE ENVIRONMENT

White Desert’s principles (akin to that of Better Safaris) are at the heart of these memorable adventures and this is covered over 5 key steps:

  1. SAF fuel
In a landmark first for any Antarctic operator, we are delivering the first test quantity of 40,000 litres of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) to Antarctica for our 2021/22 operations. We aim to replace all Jet A-1 fuel over the next 3-5 years.
  2. Carbon Neutral
We mitigate all emissions generated by our flights and activities through fully accredited carbon offset schemes. Having been CarbonNeutral® since 2007, this commitment has always been a core tenet of our company.
  3. Environmentally conscious supply chain
We are working to eliminate single-use plastics, and all other waste is shipped back to South Africa for recycling or responsible disposal. All soaps, detergents and cleaning agents are biodegradable.
  4. Pioneering renewables in Antarctica
Partnering with California-based Arctica Solar, we are using solar air heaters to warm our pods. This cutting-edge technology enables us to minimise our dependency on fossil fuel.
  5. Science & Tourism Logistics
We support and contribute to the local scientific community of Antarctica through our science and tourism logistics programme.

RESPONSIBLE – INSPIRING – ESTABLISHED

EARLY EMPORERS | 5 DAYS

70° 38′ 16″ S, 8° 15′ 45″ W

With only 12 guests on each departure, we tailor the experience to be as relaxed or as adrenalin-fuelled as you wish.

A wildlife photographer’s dream.
This trip offers unique access to a magnificent penguin colony
when the chicks are taking their first steps off their parent’s feet.

ARRIVE CAPE TOWN
Cape Town is home to award-winning vineyards and stunning ocean vistas. It is often tipped as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We will host a safety briefing the day before the flight where our staff will explain all kit requirements, assist with any last-minute preparations and update you on the latest weather forecasts in Antarctica.

CAPE TOWN – ANTARCTICA
We travel in uncompromising comfort across the mighty Southern Ocean in a Gulfstream private jet or Airbus plane. During the five-hour flight, the African night turns to day as we soar over thousands of icebergs and pass into Antarctica’s 24 hours of continuous sunshine. Destination: Wolf’s Fang runway.

EMPORER PENGUIN COLONY
Two hours flight in a Basler BT-67 from our main camp and you are at a site of more than 14,000 penguins and their young chicks. Both are totally unafraid of humans and will come within a few meters of our group, immersing you in the noise, commotion and the sheer beauty of it all. This is one of the greatest – and yet least observed – wildlife events on the planet.

MAIN CAMP
After landing on the ancient blue ice of Wolf’s Fang Runway, guests are whisked away to WHICHAWAY, our flagship luxury retreat with breathtaking views across the freshwater lakes of the Schirmacher Oasis, or to WOLF’S FANG, our brand new camp in the imposing mountains of Queen Maud Land.

Prices vary depending on camp & dates chosen (see below).

SOUTH POLE & EMPORERS | 8 DAYS

This luxury adventure takes you into the heart of Antarctica to see the Emperor Penguins. Then it’s on to the southernmost point on earth – the South Pole!

On the flight from Cape Town, you will pass into the Antarctic Circle and into 24 hours of continuous sunshine. The private plane will be equipped with return range. All carbon is offset with fully accredited projects.

ANTARCTICA – SOUTH POLE
Even now, reaching the southernmost point on earth is a feat that very few people have achieved. During the seven-hour flight, we land on the polar plateau to refuel, and you will have a chance to walk around this vast, foreboding wilderness getting a real taste for the immense scale of Antarctica.

Back on board, we continue to the South Pole, landing at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station. At the designated marker, you will be at the lowest point on earth. A place with no more East, South or West – only North and you will be able to walk around the world in just a few paces!

GETTING THERE

FLIGHTS & TRANSFERS

All travellers receive a pre-departure information pack & kit list on booking.

Guests should arrive into Cape Town the day prior to the start of their chosen itinerary. If you would like an extension in Cape Town and South Africa pre or post your Antarctica safari, we would be happy to assist – including South African wildlife safaris.

Flights may vary, please check directly with available airlines.

CLIMATE

Tours to Antarctica only run during the summer (November to March). After that, the sun is extinguished, the ice pack spreads outward, and a kind of primeval darkness settles over the region, like an impenetrable mantle that only lifts in late September.
