When to travel?

From streaming rivers, to sun-kissed horizons and luscious green shrubs, Botswana’s Okavango Delta has many opportunities to create everlasting memories with guaranteed great sightings.

Low Season (aka 5 Rivers Safari): 15 Nov – 31 March
Mid-Season: April – June & 1-14 Nov
High-Season: July – October

November – March: The 5 Rivers Safari runs from 15th November to 31st of March, a very special time of the year to visit southern Africa. During this season; rainfall and vegetation are plentiful, mammals are healthy, and many species bring their young into the world at this time. The bush is emerald green in colour with an abundance of flora and large flocks of migrant bird species.

April to September: The game viewing is bar none during these dry seasons. Watch this land come to life off when the water flows down from Angola. Early December: Antelopes give birth to their calves as its the calving season. This attracts predators tot he area – watch the circle of life unfold. January to March: Known as the green season – watch how Botswana becomes a kaleidoscope of colours in this untouched paradise.

But really, there’s no “best time” to safari, travel any time to appreciate everything Botswana has to offer. For the experienced African traveller and specialist photographer, this is the time to visit southern Africa.

Day 1: Maun Airport – Chobe National Park

Upon arrival at Maun International Airport, our staff will be there to welcome you. Chobe Safari Lodge for 2 nights.

Chobe Safari Lodge is situated in Kasane on the banks of the Chobe River and shares a border with Chobe National Park. It is the oldest lodge in Chobe and was established in 1959. Right on our doorstep is the meeting of four African countries: Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Each safari room offers guests expansive views, their own patio, air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms/shower.

Along with many species of big game, Chobe National Park boasts the largest concentration of elephant in Africa, and our game drives and boat cruises offer visitors the opportunity to witness this amazing spectacle. We also offer sunset boat cruises, private boat hire, Victoria Falls day trips, fishing, scenic flights, and Namibian Village walks.

Day 2: Game drives and activities in Chobe National Park

Day 3: Transfer. Moremi Crossing Camp for 3 nights.

Moremi Crossing is a 16 tent, eco friendly camp built on a palm fringed island surrounded by the Moremi’s game-rich seasonal floodplains and overlooking Chief’s Island. Moremi Crossing is a new style safari camp combining luxury with simplicity. This is a 100% eco-friendly development featuring the latest in solar and waste disposal technology.

Become part of the bustling river life along the papyrus clad banks of the Okavango Delta. Explore the wilderness with our game drives, guided bush walks, or sit back and absorb the scenery from a traditional ‘mokoro’ canoe. Another great way to explore the crystal clear channels of the Boro River is by motor-boat. Watch the sun set while drifting along a lagoon and sipping on sundowners. Game drives will be available only when water levels are low.

*There will be no game drives when water levels are high as areas of the concession become inaccessible. Mokoros, boat cruises & fishing are also water level dependent.

Day 4/5: Game drives and activities in Moremi

Day 6: Transfer. Nxai Pan Camp for 3 nights.

Nxai Pan is located on the western edge of the fossil pan from which the camp takes its name. The camp faces east over the open grasslands of the pans. The biggest draw to Nxai Pan National Park are the zebras that migrate by the thousands to the area – the second largest land animal migration in Southern Africa.

Day trips to Baines’ Baobabs are highly popular, and include a picnic lunch at the site. These age-old trees were immortalised in paintings by the artist and adventurer Thomas Baines in 1862. If you were to compare Baines’ paintings to the scene today, you would find that after 150 years, the trees are nearly identical – testament to the age of these magnificent giants.

Another classic activity at Nxai Pan is a walk with one of the San bushmen trackers, an informative walk that takes place within the camp’s footprint. Learn about how the San used to live nomadically: how they used to hunt, gather food, water sources, and which plants were used for medicinal purposes. Their wealth of true bush knowledge is unparalleled, and one of our guests’ favourite experiences at our desert camps.

Day 7/8: Game drives and activities in Nxai Pan

Day 9: Nxai Pan – Maun Airport

NOTE: your itinerary is flexible and we can tailor-make the number of nights, additional destinations and extensions to your safari to include beach stays (such as Zanzibar) and city stays (such as Cape Town).
