Why is this safari better?

An 11 night safari that encompasses 3 National Parks – the Kafue, Hwange and Zambezi National Parks and gives you 3 completely different safari experiences and habitats to experience in one trip!

The wide open plains of the Southern Kafue and the rugged hills and rock carvings of Bumbusi in Hwange National Park are the perfect safari combination for true safari enthusiasts and lovers of the wilderness. The variety of mammal and bird species in the Southern Kafue along with the seasonal high density close up viewing of elephants and great walking safari opportunities at Bumbusi offer 2 really unique safari experiences. Nestled in between the 4 night stay at both camps is a wonderful 3 night stay on the secretive Tsowa Island on the Zambezi River just above the Victoria Falls.

Sustainability: Your booking supports local guides and communities through eco-conscious travel and supporting local enterprise through community visits and purchasing of local crafts. Camps featured on this itinerary are also low-impact and feature solar-power, helping the environment every step of the way.

When to travel?

You have an excellent chance of seeing lots of wildlife in Zambia during the Dry season (May to October). This will fit in nicely with a visit to Victoria Falls, which is at its best from June to September. A Wet season safari (November to April) is much more challenging, as most parks and camps shut down because of heavy rain.

Best Time: May to September
High Season: July to October
Low Season: November to April (the parks are very quiet; many camps close down)
Best Weather: April, May and September (pleasant temperatures; the short afternoon rains of April rarely affect your safari)
Worst Weather: October (very hot in low-altitude parks) and December to March (the wettest months)

Available dates: 15 May – 15 November
Group size: 2 – 8 people

Day 1 – 5: Nanzhila Plains Camp for 4 nights

The closest big game safari camp to Livingstone and Victoria Falls which retains a wonderful sense of wilderness and isolation. This safari begins in Livingstone with a 3 hour road transfer to Dundumwezi Gate where you will be met by the Nanzhila Plains safari team. Enjoy a game drive into camp and settle into the beautiful rooms with views over the dambo to enjoy a 4 night stay.

The chalets or safari tents all have beautiful views over the dambo and the gauzed windows allow all the wonderful sounds of the African night to reach you clearly! Game drives, bush walks, visits to the waterholes and sundowners are all available within this Kafue region.

Game drives and safari walks around Nanzhila are bound to reveal a wide variety of wildlife and bird species including 4 out of the Big 5! Most clients will see at least 12 different antelope species on an average 3 night stay at Nanzhila and stand a good chance of adding lion, elephant, cheetah and wild dog to their sightings. We have a good number of leopard around but sightings can be harder to secure whilst buffalo and hippo are usually seen further north near Lake Itezhi-tezhi. You also stand a chance of sighting other special wildlife species such as cheetah, wild dog, hyena, zebra and warthog.

In addition to offering near-guaranteed sightings of the Black-cheeked love bird (see our cover image on this page), Nanzhila Plains is home to world class birding. Wattled Crane, Racket-Tailed Rollers and Pel’s Fishing Owl. Our bird list is over 500 species strong and Nanzhila Plains is a must for keen birders.

Day 5 – 8: Tsowa Island Camp for 3 nights

Tsowa Safari Island is situated 40km upstream from Victoria Falls half way between Kasane and Vic Falls. After breakfast, you will leave Nanzhila Plains and head south through the Park to Livingstone for a 3 night stay at the new Tsowa Island Camp located on an island in the middle of the Zambezi River just above Victoria Falls.

Experience the wonder of the largest waterfall in the world and one of the Wonder’s of the Natural World! In contrast to Nanzhila and Bumbusi, experience water based activities on the Zambezi River. Game drives are offered through this scenically beautiful national park. Start your day by gliding across the Zambezi River to the mainland where your safari vehicle will be waiting to take you on an early morning game drive in the Zambezi National Park – which is home to large herds of elephant, buffalo, lion, hyena, giraffe and numerous antelope species. The game drives are approximately 4 hours and include a refreshment stop. This activity is for children 12 years and older.

Optional activities include a visit to Victoria Falls, canoeing, river cruise, island walks and game walks (16 yrs+).

Day 8 – 11: Bumbusi WIlderness Camp for 4 nights

After 3 nights at the Tsowa Island Camp, you will have 4 nights in Hwange National Park at the remote and authentic Bumbusi Wilderness Camp. A classic safari camp tucked beneath a lush grove of giant Mahogany trees in Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park.

We have a variety of game drive routes that we explore but a huge attraction for Bumbusi are the endless and varied walking safaris available. The gorges, rivers and hills all make for outstanding walking safaris and we occasionally cut tracks of elusive black rhino that we follow. As we head deeper into the dry season, the game, especially elephant, congregates around and in camp so very often you can enjoy amazing game viewing from your chalet or the pool! Finally, the Bumbusi National Monument is located a short drive or interesting walk away – the rock carvings and ‘Great Zimbabwe style’ ruins architecture is fascinating to look at and learn about and adds a lovely richness to the Bumbusi safari experience.

The camp is remote and private which means you won’t have to share sightings with any other camps! The swimming pool, fed by the natural springs, is as popular with the elephants as it is with our guests, making for some unique encounters.
