Why is this art safari better?

Step into new worlds on this exceptional 10-day art safari. We give you a choice of two safaris, a mid-budget and a luxury option. We can also tailor your safari to mix accommodations or add or remove the number of nights to suit your ideal travel itinerary length. We are as flexible as you need us to be!

Artists will have dedicated time, either as a group or individually, to capture the beauty that is Africa, placing down on to canvas or paper the stunning surroundings that you’ll find yourself in. There’s no “tour leader” on this safari, instead, artists are together for their stay, enjoy dedicated game drives, meals and activities together and have their time to enjoy painting at leisure and perhaps be inspired by one-another.

Our art safari is for anyone wanting to capture nature’s beauty, but importantly sustainably with our specially selected accommodations that welcome our clients from around the world with consistently high standards. The areas of Amboseli and Masai Mara are renowned, particularly the properties we have selected for this safari, making the most of locations that will have you painting in no time. Dream about painting Mount Amboseli (on clear days), or your up-close encounter with huge gentle elephants, or maybe reflect on canvas or paper your morning spent with lion cubs.

You are sure to be enlightened and invigored during your time at these beautiful locations.

When to travel?

Prices start from low/mid season for travel from January-May and November, an ideal time to avoid larger tourist numbers and see quieter plains for optimum experiences such as wildlife viewing and quiet time. Kenya’s primary rainy season is April, however travelling January-March and in May & November is exceptional.

The Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra occurs between July-October (which can see higher rates for accommodations), but if you would love to experience the thrill of Mara river crossings and thousands of wildebeest on the plains, this is the time to book.

Remember: big cats, elephants and other species don’t migrate, so wildlife & bird viewing is exceptional year-round. Plus those sunrises and sunsets are worthy travelling for alone!

Day 1

Arrive into Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for the adventure of your life. Our clients are collected privately from the airport and transferred to their first accommodation. Ololo Safari Lodge in Nairobi National Park for 2 nights.

Originally an old Kenyan homestead and since converted to a small lodge, Ololo is perfectly situated, on the beautiful banks of the Mbagathi River which forms the southern border of the Nairobi National Park. Set on a productive 20 acre working farm, Ololo offers the joys of delicious ‘paddock to plate’ fresh ingredients. With our established and secluded gardens, guests are able to settle in and soak up a unique safari experience.

Day 2

Game drive in Nairobi National Park + Visit David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage

Wildlife is right on our doorstep and all can enjoy breathtaking views over the national park, to the famed Ngong Hills in the west, sundowner in hand. Or you may like to wile the hours away at the lodge by the pool, adventure on a safari into the park, take a tour of the Ololo Farm or perhaps an excursion with us into historic Karen.

Late morning/early afternoon art time.

Day 3

Breakfast and departure for Amboseli National Park

Following a gentle morning at the beautiful Ololo Safari Lodge, you depart for Wilson Nairobi Airport. The airport isn’t far from the lodge and the lodge may depart early to allow for one last game drive/transfer through the park for any last minute sightings.

Once at Wilson Nairobi Airport, clients check in with Safarilink for their 1hr flight to Amboseli – be sure to have a great view as you fly over the park. Upon landing you are met by your guide/driver who will transfer you to your accommodation.

Set in the heart of its own 3,000 acre private conservancy and in one of the richest game areas in Kenya. Tawi Lodge is an eco award winning lodge, combining unpretentious comfort with subtle accents of style coupled with traditional East African hospitality.

ol Donyo is located on over 111,000 hectares of private land in the heart of the Chyulu Hills, set between Kenya’s Tsavo and Amboseli National Parks. The property is honed from ancient lava rock that spewed out of Kilimanjaro 360,000 years ago, creating a timelessness that touches everyone who visits.

Your first day at your lodge clients will receive a warm Kenyan welcome, a brief of what to expect from your stay and any wishes for you to enjoy your stay with them. Later that day, you enjoy your first game drive in Amboseli.

Day 4 & 5

Game drives, art time and activities in Amboseli National Park (budget) or Chylu Hills (luxury)

Our safaris are very flexible, clients have the option to go on twice daily game drives – one in the morning and one late afternoon. Artists may also elect to free up mornings to suit their preferred art time, or get together for painting at the lodge. Your schedule can be arranged to suit your preferences.

Day 6

Morning light aircraft flight from Amboseli to Masai Mara National Reserve (or Mara North Conservancy) via Nairobi.

Our clients will enjoy a delicious morning breakfast at their lodge, in time for their early morning flight to their next thrilling destination of Masai Mara (Budget: Masai Mara National Reserve. Luxury: Mara North Conservancy). Once again, on landing you are met by your guide and welcomed warmly to the camp.

Zebra Plains Mara Camp is in Maasai Game Reserve which is the best wildlife Park in Africa, home to the The Annual Great Migration of wildebeests and Zebras, abundant lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, hippos and many other wildlife. The camp has the best views of the Open plains of the Mara and is frequently visited by wildlife.

Karen Blixen Camp is an eco-friendly luxury camp that gives a sense of the exiting explorer days when the savannah was seldom visited. Karen Blixen Camp comprises large luxury canvas tents, all tents are placed with undisturbed views along the Mara River giving unique and private game viewing to the Oloololo Escarpment and its rich wildlife.

Following your introduction to the camp and settling in to your room, enjoy an afternoon tea/coffee and light snack, before heading out with your guide for your first taste of the excellent Masai Mara National Reserve (budget) or Mara North Conservancy (luxury).

Day 7-9

Daily game drives, nature walk in Masai Mara (budget) or Mara North + visit to Mara Elephant Project (luxury)

Take in the fabled landscapes of the Masai Mara ecosystem, the adrenaline rushing wildlife viewing and meet local Masai people, as you enjoy four nights in this special place. Art may be done between activities, alternatively we can help schedule your day around what you would like to paint or draw, or the time of day you like to do this.

Our clients are in for a treat, as you go on game drives with sustainable wildlife viewing. On our luxury option at Karen Blixen Camp, clients can also have the special opportunity to spend an afternoon with Mara Elephant Project’s elephant monitors to discover behind the scenes of wildlife conservation.

Day 10

Saying goodbye is always the hard part!

Our clients enjoy a final morning game drive/activity and enjoyable breakfast, before being transferred to the airstrip for the return light aircraft flight back to Nairobi. We arrange all local transfers back to Jomo Kenyatta international Airport for your flight home. Travellers may wish to enjoy a meal in Nairobi before heading to the airport, which we can happily arrange.

Your itinerary is flexible and we can tailor-make the number of nights, additional destinations and extensions to your safari to include beach stays such as the spice island of Zanzibar.

Better Safaris only deal in sustainable travel experiences. We simply don’t support over-tourism and bad, irresponsible practices that harm our planet and wildlife. We are therefore pleased to say that all destinations and accommodations featured in this itinerary are low-impact – meaning low number of guest rooms (typically between 10-25 rooms) and provide sustainable solutions to environmental & humanitarian issues such as use of solar power, grey waste water management systems, vegan friendly menu items, no plastics and environmentally friendly soaps, shampoos and other cleaning methods. The properties are also key contributors to local employment and support local communities, schools and health & educational platforms.
